Baby Ashley Nicole , Shannon and Pete’s babe...
always nice to see the perfect miniatures...
the square chests, the scrunched legs...
and feet that can bend so that they can touch shinbones....
magic of compression......
enjoy the peach fuzz on the face,
the beauty of the perfect lips, the softest of skin,
the distinct sound of a newborn crying and
the wonderment of a toothless mouth not yet able to tell the secrets of heaven....
the crinkles of an ear,
the thinness of a heel,
the callous-free footpads....
the thinness of a toenail or a fingernail...
the jerk of arm and leg stretches.....
in both happiness and in the "feed me" mode.....
and then too, in the happy " I have no clothes on" wiggling and freedom mode....
a mom doing the diapering, the dressing, the thisNthats, all the while with one loose hand lightly touching the babe.......
the special palm placement around the back of the neck when holding the babe in a 'sitting' position.....
that other palm CHIN-CHEST HOLD when turning them over...
a newborn neck, free of the muscles to support the heaviness of their essence ~ their head
little 'cheesies' in the cracks, the folds of the skin....
the soft spot, which magically becomes one of the strongest places of our bodies
discussions of alcohol vs plain old water!
the magic of a simultaneously sucking, swallowing and breathing baby, an ability lost as we get older...
a baby fist, not the defensive fist of an adult.... thumb in vs thumb out......
a flat nose bottom......
peach fuzz all over...... sometimes glistening on the shoulders, the forehead, the arms, the ears...
a new voice in your family....
and just think....
she will never be smaller than in the photos you take this day...

Well, we just got home from seeing you for the first time and you look perfect! You never once opened your eyes the whole time we were there (your first few hours), but we had your Dad take a picture of you in Grandpa Dale's arms and you squinted your eyes shut really hard when the flash went off. We are so in love with you already. Tell mom to take care of herself and tell mom and dad to get rest as often as they can because you will be up and active before they know it.

We've just returned from a wonderful visit with Ashley and her parents. She is starting to smile, exercise her arms and legs, and bat at her mobile animals hanging over her crib. Her great grandmother Wagner was especially happy to be able to make the trip from Maryland to Chicago to meet her first little great grandchild! Ashley is very fortunate to have such loving and dedicated parents as Shannon and Peter.
